This Vanilla American Buttercream Frosting recipe is a classic and versatile choice for all your cake and cupcake decorating needs. It’s smooth, creamy, and easily customizable to suit your taste.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Buttercream:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks, softened)
  • 16 oz powdered sugar (1 pound, about 3.54 cups)
  • 12 tbsp milk or heavy whipping cream (up to 1/4 cup, optional)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream the Butter: Using a hand-held or stand mixer, cream the butter on medium-high speed until pale yellow, about 4-5 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl if needed.
  2. Add Sugar and Vanilla: Turn off the mixer and add powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix on low until crumbly.
  3. Mix Until Fluffy: Increase speed to medium-high and mix for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Adjust Consistency: If too thick, add milk or cream, a little at a time, until desired consistency is reached.

Notes

  • You can add food coloring to customize the frosting for different occasions.
  • For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
