This Loaded Green Bean Casserole is a deliciously creamy and savory side dish perfect for holiday dinners or family gatherings. Fresh or steamed green beans are mixed with a rich blend of cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, mayo, and cream cheese, then topped with crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and crunchy French fried onions for a satisfying texture contrast.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb green beans (fresh or frozen, steamed)
  • 1/2 cup cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Toppings

  • 1 cup French fried onions (divided into 1/2 cup and 1/2 cup)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (divided into 1/2 cup and 1/2 cup)
  • 1 cup crumbled bacon (cooked and divided into 1/2 cup and 1/2 cup)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, mayonnaise, softened cream cheese, salt, and garlic powder. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  3. Mix Green Beans with Sauce: Fold in the steamed green beans along with half of the French fried onions (1/2 cup), half of the shredded cheddar cheese (1/2 cup), and half of the crumbled bacon (1/2 cup) into the sauce mixture until everything is evenly coated.
  4. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the green bean mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  5. Add Toppings: Sprinkle the remaining French fried onions, shredded cheddar cheese, and crumbled bacon evenly over the top of the green bean mixture.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the dish is hot and bubbly. If the topping starts to brown too much before the casserole is heated through, cover loosely with foil or move to a lower oven rack.

Notes

  • You can use fresh or frozen green beans; if using fresh, trim and steam them until tender-crisp.
  • Cook the bacon ahead of time until crisp, then crumble for mixing and topping.
  • If you prefer a milder onion flavor, reduce the French fried onions by half.
  • This casserole can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
  • For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and increase cheese or add mushrooms.
