Garlic Butter
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
Bread Bowl and Cheese
- 1 pound round of sourdough bread
- 1 (8 ounce) wheel of brie cheese
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a rimmed baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter completely. Whisk in the minced garlic and dried Italian seasoning until well combined. Set aside to infuse flavors.
- Trim Brie Rind: Carefully trim off most of the rind from the wheel of brie using a knife, leaving a small amount if desired to help with structure.
- Slice Bread Top: Slice about ½-inch off the top of the sourdough bread loaf to create a lid and a hollowed space for the cheese.
- Create Bread Cavity: Place the wheel of brie on top of the bread loaf, then use a serrated knife to cut a circle around the brie and down into the bread.
- Hollow Out Bread: Remove the bread inside the circle so the brie will fit comfortably inside the bread bowl.
- Score Bread Slices: Using the serrated knife, cut 1-inch deep slices all around the outside of the bread loaf down to where the hollowed center stops, creating pull-apart sections.
- Apply Garlic Butter: Brush the hollowed inside of the bread and in between each 1-inch slice thoroughly with the prepared garlic butter mixture.
- Insert Brie and Butter: Place the trimmed brie wheel into the hollowed bread bowl. Brush the top of the brie and the outside of the bread bowl with remaining garlic butter.
- Prepare Bread Bites: Slice the removed top and hollowed bread pieces into bite-size chunks. Brush or dip these bread pieces into any leftover garlic butter and arrange them around the bread bowl on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake: Bake on the middle rack of the oven for approximately 30 minutes or until the bread bowl is golden and toasted and the brie inside has melted completely.
- Serve: Serve immediately while the brie is warm and melty and the bread bites are toasted. Ideal for dipping and sharing.
Notes
- Removing most of the brie rind helps the cheese melt smoother and enhances flavor infusion.
- If you prefer stronger garlic flavor, you can add an extra clove of garlic minced.
- Use a serrated knife to carefully hollow out the bread to avoid tearing the crust.
- This appetizer is best served fresh from the oven for optimal melty texture.
- You can substitute sourdough with any crusty round bread loaf such as boule or Italian bread.
