Fansnacht is a traditional deep-fried pastry that is light, fluffy, and perfect for breakfast or as a sweet treat. These donuts are easy to make and can be customized with your favorite toppings.

Sponge:

  • 1 tbsp dry active yeast
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

Dough:

  • 4.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Other:

  • 5 cups vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sponge: Mix yeast and warm water in a large bowl, let sit until yeast dissolves. Add flour, mix well, cover, and let rise overnight.
  2. Make Dough: Cream sugar and shortening. Add nutmeg, salt, eggs. Combine with sponge, add flour gradually. Let rise until doubled.
  3. Shape and Rise: Roll dough, cut with donut cutter, let rise until doubled.
  4. Fry: Heat oil to 375°F, fry donuts until golden brown.
  5. Cool and Enjoy: Drain, glaze, or enjoy plain. Serve with coffee or milk.
